BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Mareci is Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Structural Biology. He has a bachelor's and master's degree in physics and received his doctoral degree in physical chemistry from the University of Oxford, England in 1982. He joined the faculty of UF in the fall of 1982 as an assistant professor in the Department of Radiology and worked on the development of magnetic resonance imaging. He became an associate professor in 1987 then in 1993, he transferred to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and became the Director of the Center for Structural Biology.

RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

Our research group is studying cellular structure and biochemical processes in nervous tissue using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques in intact living organisms. We are also examining excised tissue with NMR microscopy and spectroscopy to provide a detailed understanding of the living system. We are interested in the secondary effects of the response to injury and we are studying the process of neuroprotection with pharmaceutical agents following injury. This work is accomplished through the development of NMR measurement and processing methods, as well as specialized hardware.
