Introduction:
BCH 4024 surveys the structure, functional properties, synthesis, and degradation of: amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids.
Prerequisites: Organic Chemistry (CHM 2210 and 2211) or their equivalents at other institutions.
Text: "Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, 5th ed." New York: W.H. Freeman Co. (2008). Texts are available at the Health Center Bookstore, Room MG-15, and may also be available in several local commercial bookstores. A few copies of this text are on reserve in the Health Center Library, in the Communicore building. |

Examination periods will be in the evenings on the days indicated on the syllabus, in Room CG-28 of the Communicore building. Any changes in these times will be announced well beforehand. The final examination is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, with the exact time of day to be announced later this semester.
In this course, there will be four two-hour examinations, each worth one hundred points, with a course total of four hundred points. Students final letter grades will be determined SOLELY on the basis of their performance on these examinations. All examinations will be based on the material covered in the lectures, in the discussion periods, and in the textbook. The final examination will not be cumulative. Students requesting special classroom accommodations must first register with the Dean of Students Office, which will provide documentation to students, who then must give this documentation to the instructor during the first two weeks of the course. |
